We look forward to developing a love of reading with your child. At Crowan Primary, we believe Reading is the key to unlocking educational and lifetime opportunities. We really welcome your support with this and ask for you to read with your child at least five times a week and log this in their reading records. Once the children have read a certain amount of times, they will receive coloured wrist bands - please see the letter sent home about this, or alternatively the wristbands and required reads are written at the back of the reading record. It is important that your child’s book bag is in school every day and we ask you to check book bags regularly as we often send home letters and notes in them.
Phonics
At Crowan Primary, we follow the 'Read, Write, Inc' programme which is having a big impact on the children's reading and writing. Please look under the phonics tab on the school website for further details.
The whole school is beginning the year focusing on a very special poetry book called 'The Lost Words' by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris.
The book begins:
‘Once upon a time, words began to vanish from the language of children. They disappeared so quietly that at first almost no one noticed – fading away like water on stone. The words around them: acorn, adder, bluebell, bramble, conker – gone!
Fern, heather, kingfisher, otter, raven, willow, wren...all of them gone. The words were becoming lost: no longer vivid in children’s voices, no longer alive in their stories.’
The children in Trenoweth have already begun their mission to bring the words back by studying the outdoor environment around them. They have practised moving like nature in our PE lessons, and have impressed Miss Phillips already by their use of elaborate vocabulary in their writing.
